Last night during our Food Over Medicine Club meeting we learned risk factors related to cancer. Many of them are diet and lifestyle choices. They include obesity/overweight. eating foods high in animal protein and cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle/not exercising, chronic inflammation, having chronic diseases including diabetes, stress, and lack of personal purpose. Not once were genes mentioned! While we can’t completely negate our risk, there are many things in our control that we can do. The best way to not die from cancer is to not get it!
Summer and Berries!
The middle of Summer when the berries ripen is one of my favorite times of year! I love picking local blueberries and blackberries! Almost as much fun as eating them and baking! What is your favorite berry and how do you enjoy it?
It's Almost Time!!
The farmer’s markets are starting and that means local fresh fruit and vegetables will be coming soon! This makes it convenient to begin adding more plant-based foods to your diet! Besides the fact they just taste better than ones trucked in to the stores. Go to the market, buy something local, and find a way to prepare it! Make it a challenge to see how many different foods you can eat from the market this Summer!
Are you Receiving the Newsletter?
Each month I put out a free newsletter! What are you missing? The learning opportunities that are coming up, a plant-based recipe, book recommendations, and a referenced article about food and health. The article for the March newsletter looks at whether or not it is more expensive to “eat healthy.” If you are not on the mailing list you can sign up throughout the website. If you want the March newsletter, send me an email and I will get it to you! Karen@empoweringtruehealth.com

Motivation Monday
Within the books I have been reading, I came across this Chinese Proverb twice in the last week. It must be trying to tell me something! I want to pass it along to you as well!
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.
What is it time for you to do?
Motivation Monday
In today’s world people want quick fixes and this holds true for health improvements. For true health there isn’t a quick fix, it’s a lifestyle change. I saw this quote from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, and think it reflects my approach to wellness.
"New goals don't deliver new results. New lifestyles do. And a lifestyle is a process, not an outcome. For this reason, all of your energy should go into building better habits, not chasing better results."

Food Friday!
It is easy to make your own hummus. This way you can make it without oil. For a bit of liquid put in some of the liquid from canned chickpeas. I often use jar roasted red peppers and will put some of that liquid in as well (as long as they are not in oil!). Use what you like!
Motivation Monday!
I heard a quote from Dan Buettner, who researched the Blue Zones, and want to share it. His hope is that we are living longer and healthier to enjoy life.
"The older you are the healthier you've been."
Food you eat can help you achieve this!
